Two thousand years of history
York was founded by the Romans as Eboracum in AD 71, became a major Viking trading settlement known as Jorvik in the 9th century, and grew into one of medieval England's wealthiest cities, a history you can still trace street by street today.
The Minster took over 250 years to complete and remains one of the great Gothic cathedrals of Europe, while the surviving city walls, almost entirely intact, still encircle the historic centre much as they have for centuries.
That layered history is part of what makes York so rewarding, you are never far from a Roman column, a Viking street name, or a timber-framed medieval shopfront, often within the same short walk.
Making the most of your visit
Allow a full day at minimum, the Minster, the city walls and the Shambles alone can easily fill a morning, before you have even considered the museums and shopping streets beyond them.
Parking in the city centre is limited and can be expensive, so using one of the park and ride sites on the outskirts is usually the easiest way to arrive by car.
Given the distance, this works well as a dedicated day trip from Pateley Bridge rather than a quick add-on, ideally combined with an early start to make the most of the day.
